The Boy Who Repaired the Town Clock
Chapter 3 - On the hour
The clock struck noon correctly for the first time that autumn. People gathered in the square, waiting to hear the final bell. Eli stood beside the maintenance worker, the metalworker and Mrs. Shaw.
A councillor introduced him as the boy who saved the clock. Eli interrupted, red-faced, to name everyone else. Mrs. Shaw smiled without rescuing him from the awkward pause.
Afterward, a shopkeeper brought him a broken kitchen timer. Then a teacher brought a watch that had belonged to her father. Eli could repair the timer. The watch required a specialist, and he said so.
A month later, rain soaked the square. The clock stayed on time.
Eli climbed the tower with the maintenance worker to check the new bracket. He wrote the date and measurements in the notebook, leaving space for the next visit. The repair was finished. Looking after it was not. He understood, at last, why his teacher always began with a record.
