"Nobody's Coming To Save You," My Ex-Boyfriend Smirked In The Dark Parking Garage—Until Chicago’s Most Feared Mafia Don Stepped Out Of The Shadows!

Chapter 2 - The Broken Ledger

Chapter 2 illustration

Ethan lunged forward, throwing his hands up in sheer, frantic panic. "No! Please! Not Carmine! If the Falcones get me tonight, they'll throw me off the canal bridge! Mr. Bellini, I was doing it for them! They told me to get the files on your logistics firm!"

Luca didn't give Ethan a chance to scream twice. In one fluid, practiced motion, the bodyguard caught Ethan by the throat, drove him flat against the hood of the Honda, and twisted his arm behind his shoulder blade. The sickening crunch of a wrist popping past its normal rotation made Samantha flinch, but Ethan’s cry was instantly smothered by Luca's leather palm over his mouth.

With two swift pats, Luca extracted Ethan's phone, car keys, and wallet, tossing the phone toward Marco, who caught it out of the air with one hand.

"Samantha, please!" Ethan muffled through Luca's fingers, his eyes watering, wild with terror as he looked at her across the scratched paint. "Tell him! You know me! Sam!"

Samantha looked at the man who had stalked her for nine months, who had made her check her rearview mirror at every red light, who had just tried to twist her arm to feed her to a crime syndicate.

"I don't know you at all, Ethan," she said, her voice dropping into cold, unyielding iron.

Luca dragged Ethan backward toward the concrete stairwell like a sack of wet laundry. The heavy fire door slammed shut behind them, its latch echoing through the empty garage like a rifle shot.

Silence returned to P3.

Samantha stood alone beside her car with Marco Bellini. The reality of what had just occurred crashed over her in waves. She wasn't just standing in an empty basement at midnight; she was standing three feet from the patriarch of Chicago's most entrenched underworld organization—a man whose freight lines she had stalled for three weeks over seven million dollars in fraudulent fire claims.

She reached for her bag strap, her knuckles white.

"Did you come here to kill him, or to kill me?" she asked bluntly.

Marco looked down at her. He didn't smile, but the intensity in his gray eyes was breathtaking.

"If I wanted you dead, Miss Reed, you would not have survived the elevator ride down from the fourth floor," he said calmly. He reached inside his breast pocket and pulled out a small, white linen handkerchief. Without asking, he took her right hand, lifting it gently, and wrapped the clean linen around her bleeding palm where her car keys had cut into the flesh.

His fingers were warm, steady, and remarkably gentle. For a woman who had spent nine months jumping at every shadow, the sheer physical stability radiating from him felt like leaning against a granite seawall during a gale.

"Why are you here, Mr. Bellini?" she asked, her breath catching as his thumb brushed lightly over her bruised wrist.

"Six months ago, three of my senior vice presidents stood in my boardroom and assured me that the warehouse fire in Gary was an electrical fault," Marco said, tying the linen off with surgical precision. "They told me the inventory loss was verified by our internal claims division. They brought me thirty pages of forged documentation and urged me to sign the insurance settlement."

He stepped back, his eyes searching hers.

"Then a junior commercial loss investigator at Halstead Assurance sent a single redlined document back to my office. No polite preamble. No hedging. Just eleven pages of cross-referenced bill-of-lading numbers demonstrating that ninety percent of the electronics had been moved to a siding in Joliet three days before the fire."

Samantha swallowed hard. "I was doing my job."

"You were defying men who each made half a million dollars a year to lie to me," Marco corrected her. "You saved my company seventy million dollars in federal wire fraud liabilities. And when my intermediaries offered your supervisor an executive bonus pool to expedite the payout, you threatened to submit your findings directly to the state insurance commissioner."

"A lie is a lie, Mr. Bellini. It doesn't matter who signs the bottom of the check."

Marco’s gaze darkened with something profound and dangerous. "In my world, Miss Reed, everybody lies. Politicians lie for votes. Lawyers lie for retainers. My own cousins lie to protect their skimming operations. In forty-eight years, you are the first person who looked at my name on a file and refused to bend."

He reached into his overcoat and pulled out a sleek, embossed leather folder, extending it toward her.

"What is that?" she asked, not reaching for it.

"A contract," Marco said. "Effective midnight tonight, Halstead Assurance has released you from your non-compete clause. The Board of Directors accepted your resignation twenty minutes ago."

Samantha's eyes widened in outrage, the shock breaking through her fear. "You had me fired?"

"I had you liberated," Marco replied smoothly. "As of tomorrow morning, you are the Chief Compliance and Forensic Auditor for Bellini International Holdings. Your salary is quadrupled. Your brother's medical debt at Northwestern Memorial has been settled in full. And you will never have to look at an empty parking garage again."
