My Husband Divorced Me While 9 Months Pregnant And Called Me Worthless—Until I Walked Into His Boardroom With The Deed To His Entire $90M Empire

Chapter 2 - The Red Dress In The Boardroom

Chapter 2 illustration

The executive boardroom on the twenty-second floor of the Mitchell Logistics Tower was a temple built to worship Ryan Mitchell's unbridled vanity.

Surrounded by panoramic, floor-to-ceiling glass walls that provided a sweeping view of downtown Dayton and the Great Miami River, the room featured a thirty-foot custom conference table carved from Brazilian teak, surrounded by twenty high-backed Italian leather executive armchairs. In the center of the room stood an elaborate ice sculpture carved into the shape of a freight locomotive, flanked by silver trays of Beluga caviar, smoked salmon canapés, and bottles of Dom Pérignon chilling in hammered pewter buckets.

Ryan Mitchell stood at the head of the conference table, admiring his reflection in the tinted glass windows.

He was wearing a bespoke, chalk-stripe three-piece suit imported from London, an emerald-green silk tie, and a solid platinum Rolex Daytona that glinted brilliantly under the recessed halogen spotlights. Beside him, perched on the edge of the teak table like an empress holding court, was Amber Collins. She wore an off-the-shoulder designer sheath dress in vibrant scarlet, her blonde hair falling in immaculate waves across her shoulders, holding a slim gold iPad. Her left hand was deliberately positioned to catch the light, showing off the flawless four-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring Ryan had purchased three weeks earlier.

"Did the valet park the Aston Martin out front, babe?" Amber purred, taking a delicate sip of champagne from a crystal flute. "I told the society editor from the *Dayton Daily News* to arrive at eleven. I want our engagement announcement running on the front page of the Sunday lifestyle section right beside the press release for the expansion loan."

"The car is right by the front revolving doors, sweetheart," Ryan smirked, walking over and placing a possessive hand on her bare shoulder. "Let the whole city see it. Today is the day Mitchell Logistics crosses into the major leagues. Once this Apex representative signs the five-million-dollar line of credit, we execute the purchase order for the regional rail depot. In eighteen months, my personal net worth will cross forty million."

"And what about that pathetic ex-wife of yours?" Amber giggled, adjusting the strap of her Christian Louboutin heels. "Has she called begging for rent money yet?"

Ryan let out a sharp, mocking bark of laughter, shaking his head with dismissive disgust. "The woman is probably sitting in her dead mother’s kitchen right now, clipping grocery coupons and crying into a bowl of instant soup. She filed for emergency child support last week—claiming she can't afford formula. I told my lawyer to drag the filings out for six months. Let her sweat. She needs to understand that when you refuse to be an asset to a powerful man, you starve in the gutter where you belong."

Around the conference table, seven junior board members, three regional vice presidents, and two commercial lending officers from Fifth Third Bank laughed politely, eager to curry favor with the rising corporate star.

At precisely 9:58 AM, the heavy double doors of the executive boardroom swung open.

Ryan didn't turn around immediately, adopting his rehearsed posture of cool, unflappable executive confidence. He cleared his throat, picked up a laser pointer, and projected the first slide of his PowerPoint presentation onto the eighty-five-inch interactive wall display: **MITCHELL LOGISTICS: EXPANSION 2026 & THE APEX ALLIANCE.**

"Welcome, gentlemen!" Ryan boomed, turning around with an expansive, theatrical smile, his arms outstretched in greeting. "We are deeply honored to welcome the leadership team from Apex Operations to our flagship headquarters. As you can see from our third-quarter margins, Mitchell Logistics has established an unshakeable operational dominance—"

Ryan’s voice didn't just trail off; it died in his throat with a wet, choking gasp.

The laser pointer slipped from his fingers, hitting the Brazilian teak table with a sharp clatter before rolling off onto the carpeted floor.

The entire boardroom fell into a sudden, suffocating silence so absolute that the only sound was the rhythmic, metallic click of high heels echoing against the marble threshold.

I stepped into the room.

I was wearing a tailored charcoal-gray wool pantsuit cut with razor-sharp lines, an ivory silk blouse, and pearl earrings that had belonged to my grandmother. My dark hair was swept up into a sleek, architectural chignon, completely exposing my calm, unyielding expression. In my right hand, I carried a slim black leather executive portfolio embossed with the gold initials *T.P.*

Walking half a step behind me was David Morales, transformed out of his flannel into an immaculate, bespoke navy three-piece suit, his gray hair neatly combed, his weathered posture radiating the lethal authority of an old general. Flanking us were Arthur Vance, the most feared corporate restructuring litigator in the Midwest, and two senior forensic auditors from Ernst & Young carrying thick, accordion-style legal briefs.

Ryan’s skin turned from a healthy, sun-tanned bronze to the sickening, translucent gray of skim milk. His jaw hung slack, his pupils dilated with blinding, disbelieving panic.

"Olivia?" he stammered, his voice climbing into a high, cracking pitch that sounded like a frightened teenager. "What... what kind of sick joke is this? How did you get past security downstairs?!"

Amber leaped up from the edge of the table, her scarlet dress swaying, her face contorting into an ugly sneer of pure outrage. "Are you completely insane?!" Amber shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at my chest. "Security! Get security up here right now! Ryan, why is your homeless ex-wife walking into our executive meeting?! She’s a trespassing welfare case!"

"Miss Collins, if you utter one more syllable in this room, I will have the county sheriff take you into custody for criminal interference with corporate governance," Arthur Vance said, his voice flat, icy, and lethal. He stepped forward, laying a certified judicial order stamped with the blue seal of the Delaware Chancery Court squarely in the center of the teak table.

"Sit down, Ryan," David Morales commanded, his deep baritone rolling across the silent room like incoming thunder. "You don't call security on the Chairman of the Board."

"Chairman?!" Ryan gasped, clutching the back of his executive chair with trembling hands to keep his knees from buckling. "Chairman of what?! Olivia doesn't have a job! Her father was a greasy plant mechanic who died with grease under his fingernails! She inherited a few hundred thousand dollars in life insurance, that’s all!"

"My father, Thomas Parker, was the founder, sole shareholder, and Chief Executive Officer of Miami Valley Thermal Systems," I said, walking slowly down the length of the conference table.

Every single board member scrambled to their feet, bowing their heads respectfully as I passed. They knew the name Thomas Parker. In the manufacturing sector of the Midwest, Thomas Parker was a legend—a titan who supplied ninety percent of the heavy industrial heat exchangers used by North American rail and automotive conglomerates.

I stopped at the head of the table—the seat Ryan had occupied thirty seconds earlier.

David pulled the executive chair back for me. I sat down, smoothed the lapels of my charcoal blazer, crossed my legs, and laid my leather portfolio flat against the wood.

"My father didn't need to wear two-thousand-dollar chalk-stripe suits to feel like a man, Ryan," I said, my voice tranquil, steady, and terrifyingly clear. "He didn't waste company money leasing foreign sports cars or buying jewelry for cheap mistresses to project the illusion of wealth. He built an eighty-million-dollar manufacturing empire with his bare hands. And when your little trucking company was sixty days away from an involuntary bankruptcy liquidation three years ago, my father’s private equity firm, Apex Operations, stepped in and bought your debt."

I unzipped the portfolio, pulled out a thick, notarized document bound in dark blue leather, and slid it directly across the glass table until it struck the base of Ryan’s champagne bucket.

"Apex Operations owns seventy-five percent of the common stock of Mitchell Logistics," I announced, looking around the room at the twenty frozen executives. "Apex holds ninety percent of the voting proxy rights. And as the sole trustee and heir of the Thomas Parker Estate, I am the Chairman of Apex Operations. Which means, Ryan... you are standing in my building, using my equipment, drinking my champagne, and presenting your little slideshow to your boss."
