My Fiancé Bought Her A Diamond Ring During My Wedding Dress Fitting—So I Walked Down The Aisle In That Ivory Gown To Marry His Billionaire Rival!

Chapter 1 - The Glass Between Us

Chapter 1 illustration

The rain on Madison Avenue fell in cold, glassy sheets, slicking the black limestone pavement until the luxury storefronts mirrored the gray sky. My boots made no sound as I pushed through the heavy glass door of Maison Elise and stepped into the damp air, the chill biting through my cashmere sweater.

Bellamy Row was sixty feet away.

Its windows were draped in dark velvet, framed by understated brass trim that announced heritage without needing to scream. It was the kind of establishment that did not display prices, where entrance required an appointment and a discreet buzz from a security desk inside.

I walked toward the brass handle, my pulse hammering against the hollow of my throat. My mind felt hyper-focused, stripped of breath and peripheral noise. Six weeks. In forty-two days, three hundred guests were scheduled to gather at the Whitaker flagship ballroom in Midtown to watch me walk down the aisle toward Grant Mercer. The programs were printed. The invitations had been delivered on embossed deckled parchment.

I pushed the buzzer.

The security guard inside recognized me instantly; Grant and I had selected my diamond tennis bracelet there three months ago for my birthday. The lock disengaged with a muted electronic click.

“Good afternoon, Miss Whitaker,” the doorman greeted me, tipping his cap. “Terrible weather out there.”

“Good afternoon, Robert. Is Arthur available?”

Arthur was the private client director. Before Robert could answer, my gaze drifted past the open showroom toward the discreet, frosted-glass private viewing salons at the rear of the boutique.

The door to Salon Two was cracked open three inches.

A warm, golden amber glow spilled onto the dark parquet floor. And through the clear gap between the frosted panel and the mahogany frame, I saw them.

Grant sat in an oxblood leather club chair, his charcoal custom wool blazer unbuttoned, his silk tie loosened at his neck. His posture was unmistakable—the casual, effortless dominance of a man who owned thirty boutique hotels and believed the universe naturally bent to his schedule.

Beside him sat Camille Rhodes.

Her cream wool coat was draped elegantly over the back of her chair. Her blonde hair fell in soft, honeyed waves around her shoulders, catching the salon’s recessed spotlights. She had a manicured hand resting lightly on Grant’s forearm, leaning so close her lips were inches from his ear.

Arthur sat across from them behind a velvet tray, using tweezers to adjust a platinum setting.

“It catches the ambient light beautifully, Mr. Mercer,” Arthur was saying, his voice filtering through the doorway. “An exceptional four-carat emerald cut. Flawless clarity.”

Grant looked down at the velvet cushion, a soft, intimate smile curving his mouth—a smile he had not given me in over six months.

“Try it on, Camille,” Grant said, his tone low and tender. “Let’s see if it fits the way you like.”

Camille smiled, that breathless, practiced laugh that had defined her social circle since her college days. She slipped the platinum band onto her left ring finger, turning her hand toward the light.

“It’s breathtaking, Grant,” she whispered, her eyes shining as she looked directly at him. “It’s exactly what we designed in Paris all those years ago. You actually kept the sketch?”

“I keep things that matter,” Grant answered softly.

My chest constricted, ice running through my veins, but my spine locked straight.

A board call was running late.

That was what his text had read at three-fifteen. *Stuck with the risk committee, darling. Fitting will have to go without me. Kiss your mother for me.*

I took two slow, measured steps toward the door. I did not shove it open. I did not scream. I pulled the brass handle until the mahogany door swung wide, letting the cold air of the showroom flood the heated salon.

Arthur looked up first, his eyes widening in pure horror as his jaw dropped.

Camille turned her head, the diamond flashing on her finger, her smile freezing into a mask of sudden shock.

Grant’s head snapped toward me. For a fraction of a second, the polished CEO vanished, replaced by the sheer, naked panic of a man who had stepped into open air above a chasm.

“Lauren,” Grant choked out, rising instantly to his feet, knocking his knee against the heavy walnut table.

I stood in the doorway, my hands resting calmly in the pockets of my black trousers.

“Don’t get up, Grant,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and devoid of tremor. “Arthur, how much is the setting?”

Arthur swallowed hard, looking desperately between the two of us. “Miss Whitaker… I… this is a private—”

“It’s seven hundred and eighty thousand dollars,” Grant interrupted, stepping toward me with his hands raised, his voice dropping into that smooth, persuasive register he used during corporate buyouts. “Lauren, listen to me. This isn't what it looks like. Camille’s company is launching a bridal subscription box for her high-end lifestyle tier. She needed an authentic consultation piece to shoot promotional campaigns, and because Mercer Urban Resorts is co-branding the launch, I agreed to review the inventory with her.”

Camille quickly slid the ring off her finger, placing it back onto the black velvet tray with trembling hands. “Lauren, truly, he was just doing me a business favor. I know how this must appear, but—”

“You’ve been divorced four months, Camille,” I said, looking her directly in the eyes. “And you’ve been back in Manhattan for six. Did the promotional campaign require you to touch his arm for twenty minutes, or was that simply part of the customer service package?”

Grant’s face hardened, the panic transforming into irritation as he stepped into the hallway, pulling the door shut behind him to shield Camille from my view.

“You’re making a scene in public, Lauren,” he whispered harshly, leaning down so his words were meant only for me. “You’re acting completely paranoid. I have been working eighty hours a week trying to close the Mercer-Whitaker merger before the wedding. I took twenty minutes out of my day to help a professional associate, and you’re interrogating me like a criminal. Do you trust me so little after four years?”

The lawyer’s answer.

He was trying to flip the board. Trying to make his betrayal a symptom of my insecurity.

“I trusted you completely forty-five minutes ago, Grant,” I said quietly. “While Mara was pinning twelve thousand dollars of ivory silk to my waist next door. While my mother was sitting on a velvet couch waiting for you to walk through the door.”

Grant paused, his throat bobbing as he swallowed. “I was going to come over as soon as we finished here.”

“No, you weren’t,” I replied, stepping back toward the main showroom. “Because you didn't buy that ring for a promotion. Arthur doesn't do promotional loans. Arthur sells bespoke pieces that require three signatures and wire transfers.”

I turned my back on him and began walking toward the exit.

“Lauren, stop!” Grant hissed, grabbing my wrist with just enough pressure to halt my stride.

I stopped. I didn't pull away. I simply turned my head and looked down at his hand on my skin with a cold, piercing finality that made his fingers slowly uncurl.

“Don’t touch me, Grant,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet loud enough to echo off the marble walls. “Go back inside. Put the ring on Camille’s finger. Because if you ever come within ten feet of me again, my mother will pull every single commercial loan backing the Mercer Urban Resorts portfolio before the market opens tomorrow morning.”

Grant stood frozen in the center of Bellamy Row, the blood completely drained from his face, watching me walk out into the pouring rain.
