Mafia Boss Invited His Plain Secretary To Dinner As A Joke—Until She Walked In Draped In Black Silk And Stripped His Entire Cartel In Sixty Seconds!

Chapter 5 - The Ledger of the Damned

Chapter 5 illustration

Larkin grabbed her wrist.

The movement was pure instinct, the defensive reflex of a man who had survived four assassination attempts before his thirtieth birthday. But as his fingers closed around the slender bone, he felt no resistance. She didn't pull away. She didn't gasp. Her pulse beneath his thumb was steady, slow, and completely undisturbed—fifty-two beats a minute.

"Explain," he growled, his voice vibrating against her throat.

"Let go of my wrist, Larkin," she said calmly. "You don't grab your new majority partner."

"You're a federal agent with an open badge!"

"I was a federal agent until 7:59 PM," Penelope corrected, her eyes gleaming with cold amusement. "At 8:00 PM, my formal resignation was submitted to the Deputy Director's secure server. Along with the complete settlement agreement signed by the Attorney General's office."

Larkin’s grip loosened. His fingers slipped from her skin. "What settlement?"

Penelope pulled a second titanium drive from her clutch, holding it between two crimson-tipped fingers.

"Arthur Pendleton held the sovereign voting shares of Steves Corporation through a blind holding company in Vaduz," she explained, her voice sharp, technical, and terrifyingly clear. "To prevent a systemic collapse of the regional maritime logistics network that would trigger a congressional investigation, the Department of Justice agreed to accept the complete forfeiture of Pendleton’s shares in exchange for sealing the grand jury indictments against your freight operations."

Larkin stared at her, the pieces clicking together in his mind with the agonizing perfection of a master lock turning in a vault. "The shares... they went to public auction?"

"They went to an emergency asset recovery trust," Penelope said. "Funded entirely by the whistleblower restitution payout awarded to the operative who exposed Pendleton’s eleven-year offshore skimming scheme. Which happens to be me."

She stepped back, spreading her hands in a delicate, mocking gesture that took in the terrace, the hotel, and the city below.

"I own fifty-one percent of Steves Corporation, Larkin. The shipping lines, the cold storage terminals, the Jersey docks, and the forty-second floor. You still have your four hundred million in private equity. You still have your seat at the head of the boardroom. But every dollar that moves through your system now passes through my desk."

Larkin let out a breathless, disbelieving laugh. He ran a hand over his cropped dark hair, shaking his head as the sheer magnitude of the trap hit him.

"You didn't just audit me," he breathed, looking at her with a mixture of terror and a savage, unwilling admiration that made his blood pound in his ears. "You took my entire life while handing me a black coffee every morning."

"You said it yourself on Tuesday," Penelope remarked, leaning against the doorway with her arms crossed over her black silk gown. "'She’s a ghost in orthopedic shoes.' You were so busy looking for an enemy with an army that you didn't notice the woman counting your bullets."

The heavy glass door clicked open again.

Thomas Dixon stepped out onto the terrace, his face white as bone, his phone clutched in a trembling hand. "Larkin... Larkin, we’ve got a problem. The central bank in Manhattan just froze our clearing house accounts. Our corporate lawyers in Midtown are saying... they’re saying someone executed an emergency proxy takeover under the Delaware corporate charter!"

Thomas stopped dead when he saw Penelope standing beside Larkin, completely unbothered, her red lips curved into that terrifying, serene smile.

"What is she still doing here?" Thomas hissed, raising his weapon toward Penelope. "Larkin, step away from her! She’s the one who leaked the—"

Larkin moved like a striking viper.

He didn't look back. His arm shot out, his palm slamming into Thomas’s chest with brutal force, driving his cousin back against the brick wall of the penthouse. With his other hand, Larkin twisted the gun from Thomas’s grip, ejected the magazine, racked the live round from the chamber into the air, caught it, and dropped the empty weapon onto the wet gravel.

"Get out," Larkin said, his voice dropping into a register that made Thomas's knees buckle.

"Larkin... she’s an agent! She’s—"

"Thomas," Larkin whispered, leaning in until his sea-cold eyes bored into his cousin's skull. "If you ever speak to the chairman of this company again, I will personally assign you to the waste management division in Staten Island. Forever. Clear your desk by midnight."

Thomas looked from Larkin’s murderous face to Penelope’s amused expression. The realization that the world had fundamentally shifted beneath his feet finally broke his spirit. He swallowed hard, turned on his heel, and fled through the French doors into the empty ballroom.

The terrace fell quiet again, save for the hum of the city and the steady rhythm of the rain.

Larkin looked down at the unspent brass cartridge in his hand, then turned slowly back to Penelope.

"Fifty-one percent," he murmured.

"Fifty-one," she confirmed.

"And what, Miss Woods, does the chairman require of her chief executive on Monday morning?"
