Her Blind Billionaire Husband Opened His Eyes On Their Wedding Night—Then She Uncovered The Lethal 3-Year Trap That Shook The High-Society Elite

Chapter 3 - The Heist in the Dark

The forty-fourth floor of the Voss Tower in downtown Boston hung suspended in the foggy night like a monolith of dark glass and brushed steel. Forty stories below, in the glittering, crystal-draped expanse of the Grand Plaza Ballroom, the Annual Autumn Heritage Gala was in full swing. The muffled swell of a twenty-piece orchestra, the clinking of crystal flutes, and the performative laughter of New England’s wealthiest financial elites drifted upward through the elevator shafts like the hum of a distant hive.

At the head table in the ballroom, Lachlan sat impeccably dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo. His dark sunglasses masked his eyes; his expression was the picture of detached, tranquil blindness, nodding politely as his grandmother Astrid introduced him to a retired supreme court justice.

Beneath the white linen tablecloth, however, Lachlan’s left hand rested inside his pocket, his index finger tapping a series of silent, rhythmic codes onto the screen of a customized encrypted transmitter.

Up on the forty-fourth floor, the service stairwell door clicked open.

Thea slipped into the shadowy, marble-tiled executive corridor. She wore a stunning, backless emerald-green silk gown that flowed like liquid around her ankles, but her high-heeled evening shoes were clutched tightly in her left hand. Moving barefoot across the cold stone, she was completely silent, her breath shallow, her pulse pounding in her ears like a tribal drum.

Hidden beneath the elaborate styling of her dark hair, a flesh-toned, micro-receiver was nestled deep inside her right ear canal.

"Turn left at the glass partition," Lachlan’s voice murmured through the earpiece, smooth, calm, and terrifyingly clear despite the chaos forty floors below. "The motion sensors along the executive corridor are on a twenty-second refresh cycle. Count to five after the sweep light turns amber, then cross to the double doors of Julian’s private office."

Thea reached the corner. Through the shadows, she watched the tiny infrared sensor above the ceiling crown transition from pulsing red to a steady, pale amber.

*One... two... three... four... five.*

She darted across the open hallway, her bare feet silent against the marble, pressing her back flat against the mahogany double doors of Julian Voss’s inner sanctum.

"I’m at the door," she whispered into the microscopic lapel microphone disguised as a diamond brooch on her bodice.

"The digital lock utilizes a dual-factor biometric and alphanumeric override," Lachlan instructed through the earpiece. "Julian’s master password has been static for eighteen months because of his arrogance. Enter: *V-O-S-S-1-9-8-4-E-X-E-C*. Then hold the silver bypass pin from my cufflink against the optical scanner."

Thea pulled the small, heavy silver pin from the hidden pocket of her dress, punched the code into the glowing blue keypad, and held the metallic surface flat against the scanner lens.

A soft, mechanical *hiss* released the hydraulic lock. The heavy doors swung inward an inch.

Thea slipped inside, pulling the door shut behind her until the latch clicked.

Julian’s private office was an opulent testament to stolen wealth. Immense panoramic windows offered a breathtaking view of the harbor lights shimmering through the rain, while the room was dominated by an antique walnut desk that had once belonged to Lachlan’s father.

"The air-gapped terminal is concealed behind the oil painting of the *Voss Maritime Fleet* on the north wall," Lachlan guided, his tone steady as a surgeon's scalpel. "Swing the frame outward from the right hinge. Plug the black hardware drive into the primary diagnostic port."

Thea moved with frantic, disciplined speed. She swung the massive canvas away from the wall, exposing a compact, military-grade terminal embedded in the concrete. She pulled the black flash drive from her wrist purse and jammed it into the illuminated slot.

The terminal monitor flickered to life. A progress bar appeared on the screen, accompanied by an aggressive green digital counter: **INITIALIZING EXTRACTION: 0%... 12%... 28%...**

"It's working, Lachlan," she whispered, her hands trembling as she stared at the screen. "It’s decrypting the offshore logs."

"Hold your position," Lachlan replied. "Julian just concluded his opening toast downstairs. He’s speaking with the commissioner of ports. You have approximately six minutes before—"

Suddenly, Lachlan’s voice in the earpiece cut out, replaced by a blast of sharp, crackling static.

Thea gasped, touching her ear. "Lachlan? Lachlan, can you hear me?"

Nothing. Only a hollow, low-frequency hum that signaled an active communications jammer.

Behind her, the heavy brass door handles of the office turned with a sharp, concussive *click*.

Thea’s blood turned to pure ice. She snatched the hardware drive from the terminal port just as the extraction bar flashed **100% COMPLETE**, slammed the oil painting back into place, and spun around.

The double doors swung open, flooding the dark office with the yellow light from the executive corridor.

Framed in the doorway stood Julian Voss. He held a crystal tumbler of scotch in his left hand, his tuxedo jacket unbuttoned, his face flushed with alcohol and venom. Beside him stood two broad-shouldered men dressed in unmarked black tactical suits, their hands resting noticeably on the holstered firearms at their sides.

Julian’s gaze swept across the shadowy room, locking squarely onto Thea standing beside the mahogany desk, her shoes in her hand, her emerald gown catching the moonlight.

The thin, pleasant smile on Julian’s face curdled into a mask of pure, murderous rage.

"Well, well, well," Julian murmured, taking a slow, heavy step into the office, the ice clinking against his glass. "What an extraordinary coincidence. I thought my beloved nephew's little charity bride was downstairs powdering her nose."

The two tactical guards stepped inside, closing the heavy doors behind them and engaging the manual deadbolts.

"I... I was looking for the terrace, Mr. Voss," Thea stammered, instantly adopting the posture of a terrified, trembling child, backing away toward the windows. "The elevators... the buttons were confusing... I got off on the wrong floor..."

"Do not insult my intelligence, you little gutter rat," Julian snarled, slamming his scotch glass onto the desk with enough violence to send dark liquid splashing across the leather blotter. "The forty-fourth floor requires an executive keycard to summon the lift. And the private communications jammer my men just activated in this hallway was triggered by an encrypted radio frequency originating directly from this room."

Julian stepped closer, his eyes dropping to the small, clenched fist she was hiding behind the folds of her green dress.

"Open your hand, Thea," Julian commanded, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp growl. "Open your hand right now, or I will have these gentlemen break your fingers one by one until you drop whatever you just pulled from my terminal."

Thea pressed her back against the cold, damp glass of the towering windows, forty stories above the pavement. Her heart hammered with such force she felt lightheaded, but her fingers remained locked like an iron vise around the drive.

"You killed Lachlan's father," Thea said, dropping the frightened act completely, her voice ringing clear and steady in the dim room. "You cut the brakes on his car. And you stole thirty million dollars from the port contracts."

Julian paused, a cold, sickening laugh bubbling up from his chest. "Look at the little mouse. She found her voice. Yes, I killed my brother. Thomas was a sanctimonious fool who thought business was a church choir. He was going to ruin this family with his pathetic moral crusades. And my dear nephew Lachlan was so shattered by the accident that he burned his own eyes out in his grief."

Julian nodded to the two armed men. "Take the drive from her. Then walk her down to the underground freight dock. Accidents happen in high-rise buildings during galas every year. A tragic fall down the elevator shaft will tidy this up quite nicely."

The two men stepped forward, their heavy boots thudding against the floor.

Before their hands could reach her, the solid mahogany double doors behind Julian did not merely open.

They exploded inward.
