The Spare Key on the Blue Ribbon
Chapter 2 - An ordinary question
Her mother did not ask why Liv had been silent. She asked whether the kettle in Liv's flat still leaked. The ordinary question broke through the answer Liv had rehearsed.
She explained the job loss, the rent and how ashamed she felt. Her mother offered a room, not a verdict. Liv asked whether they could agree on household rules before she returned.
They wrote them together: shared chores, privacy, a modest contribution when she found work, and no daily interrogation about applications. Her mother added one condition. Liv should say when she needed help rather than disappearing behind "fine."
Liv arrived with two bags. The ribbon was still around the key. She used it to open the door instead of knocking like a visitor.
