My Husband Skipped My Triplets’ Birth For A $612 Hotel Room—Until My Midnight Freeze Locked His Offshore Accounts!
Chapter 5 - The Handcuffs at the South Gate
The lead detective tapped his gold shield against his leather credential case, stepping two paces onto the linoleum.
"Diane Mercer? Arthur Vance?" the detective asked, his voice flat as an iron plate.
Arthur Vance immediately raised both hands waist-high, taking a step back toward the bathroom door. "Detective, I am retained legal counsel acting strictly under an advisory engagement. I hold no operational authority over the accounts."
"Save it for the magistrate, counselor," the detective replied, pulling two folded warrants from his breast pocket. "We have an emergency arrest and seizure order issued by Judge Vance at the municipal courthouse twenty minutes ago."
Diane staggered back against the wall, clutching her pearl necklace as if she were actively suffocating.
"An arrest order?!" Diane shrieked. "On what grounds?! I am the matriarch of the Mercer family!"
"Conspiracy to commit aggravated bank fraud, filing false corporate encumbrances, and witness intimidation," the detective stated without blinking.
He turned toward the hospital security officer.
"Escort Mrs. Mercer to the administrative lobby. The patrol cruiser is waiting at the main entrance."
"You can't do this!" Diane wailed, thrashing her arms as the officer took her by the elbows. "Lauren! Tell them! Think about your children! Think about their surname!"
"My children's surname is Hayes, Diane," I said coldly, looking her dead in the eye. "I filed the birth certificates with the hospital registrar forty minutes after delivery."
Diane’s eyes bulged with raw, unadulterated venom as the officer turned her toward the door.
Through the speakerphone still resting on my bed, the sound of heavy boots echoed from Evan’s line, followed by a firm, commanding voice:
"Evan Mercer? Hands behind your back. You're under arrest for grand larceny and corporate embezzlement."
"Lauren! Please!" Evan’s voice wailed through the receiver, tears choking his words. "Tell them it was an accounting mistake! Tell them you authorized the hotel suite! Don't let them take me in front of the staff!"
Click. Snap.
The metallic sound of handcuffs locking over Evan’s wrists transmitted clearly over the open connection.
I reached out with my right hand, tapped the red disconnect button, and ended the call.
The silence that settled over my room was absolute.
Arthur Vance gathered his scattered papers with frantic, trembling fingers, shoved them into his leather portfolio, and slipped out into the corridor without meeting my gaze.
Molly let out a long, heavy breath, walking over to the rolling bed tray and tossing the unsigned proxy documents directly into the blue plastic recycling bin beneath the sink.
"It's over," Molly whispered, her voice thick with relief.
"Not yet," I replied, looking toward the window where the afternoon sun was finally breaking through the clouds.
Then, from the bottom of my travel bag near the chair, my private personal cell phone began to vibrate with an unfamiliar, international country code.
