A Letter Delivered Thirty Years Late
Chapter 2 - What the letter could not fix
They met at a park, neutral ground between their homes. Rose read the letter twice. It did not erase the evenings she had spent alone beside their mother's bed. Ana did not ask it to.
"I thought you were relieved to be away," Rose said.
"I was terrified to come back and find her worse. I mistook being useful for being present."
Rose remembered another envelope, the money Ana sent. She had put it toward medication without knowing it came from her sister's night shifts.
They spoke slowly. Some memories matched; others did not. The letter explained one silence, not every hurt. When Rose cried, Ana waited rather than reaching for an easy apology that would hurry her through it.
