The Navy Cross Pinned To My Dress Silenced My Family—Until The Shadow Admiral Challenged My Command At Dawn!
Chapter 4 - The Tarmac Standdown
Julian Vance lunged forward half a step, his face mottled with purple rage.
"You insubordinate little bastard!" Julian roared. "I will have you stripped of that Trident before the tide turns!"
Before Julian could take another breath, Commander Hayes stepped into the gap, his six-foot-three combat frame towering over the Vice Admiral.
"Take another step toward that operator, Julian," Hayes warned, his tone flat as an iron anvil, "and I’ll remind you what BUD/S Class 210 taught us about treason."
Admiral Thomas Vance raised his mahogany cane, pointing the ferrule directly at Marcus Sterling’s leather briefcase.
"Open the case, Counselor," Thomas commanded.
"This... this is attorney-client work product!" Sterling squeaked, clutching the alligator-skin bag tighter.
Special Agent Vance stepped onto the sand from the boardwalk, flanked by two NCIS special agents holding an unsealed federal seizure order.
"The crime-fraud exception pierced your privilege twelve minutes ago, Mr. Sterling," Agent Vance said calmly.
He reached out, twisted the case from Sterling’s trembling fingers, and snapped the brass latches open with two loud, echoing metallic cracks.
Inside lay stacks of encrypted optical discs, three diplomatic passports, and a red-bound manifest bearing the gold emblem of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission.
Agent Vance lifted the first document, his eyes scanning the ledger lines.
"Account Number: Omega-Four-Twelve," the agent read aloud for the entire beach to hear. "Beneficial owners: Julian Vance and Arthur Carter. Current liquid balance: eighty-four million dollars."
Julian’s breath came in ragged, shallow gasps.
"That fund was a classified black-budget contingency pool," Julian stammered, his aristocratic arrogance completely dissolving into raw, cornered terror.
"It was an embezzlement pipeline," I said, stepping up until I was inches from his face. "And every cent was skimmed from the armor plating budgets of the exact helicopters my team had to fly into combat."
Down on the main boulevard of the naval base, the deep, mechanical wail of three heavy federal emergency vehicles rose in a synchronized crescendo.
