The Navy Cross Pinned To My Dress Silenced My Family—Until The Shadow Admiral Challenged My Command At Dawn!
Chapter 2 - The Counter-Intelligence Hold
I pulled out the ruggedized cryptographic communicator, tapping the biometric thumb-scanner.
The high-resolution OLED screen flashed amber: NATIONAL RECONNAISSANCE OFFICE // SECURE LINK ACTIVE.
Julian Vance took half a step forward, his hand dropping toward the holster at his hip.
"Surrender that terminal, Captain Carter," Julian commanded, his voice tightening. "Under Special Access Program regulations, you are no longer cleared for compartmented telemetry."
"My clearance is granted by the National Command Authority, Admiral," I replied without breaking eye contact. "Not your administrative desk at the Pentagon."
Marcus Sterling stepped up to Julian’s shoulder, clearing his throat nervously.
"Admiral, the stay order is signed by the Senior Administrative Judge," Sterling whispered. "She has to surrender her command instruments."
Sarah Vance reached down, picking up her dropped cane from the sand, her eyes blazing as she looked at her uncle.
"You sent that extraction team into the Kunar Valley twelve years ago, didn't you, Uncle Julian?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling with raw, sudden clarity.
Julian’s face tightened into an unyielding mask of stone. "Sarah, you were eight years old. You know nothing of naval operational logistics."
"She knows enough," Admiral Thomas Vance rumbled, taking a heavy step forward, his cane driving deep into the soft sand. "She knows you signed the flight path alteration order forty minutes before my helicopter took ground fire over Asadabad."
A collective intake of breath rippled through the four Master-at-Arms personnel standing behind Julian.
The lead security petty officer shifted his boots on the asphalt, his hand instinctively dropping away from his holster.
Julian chuckled—a dry, humorless rasp that sounded like dead leaves scraping across concrete.
"Thomas, your paranoia belongs in a medical discharge review," Julian said smoothly. "The investigative report confirmed mechanical failure due to high-altitude icing."
"The investigative report was drafted by your procurement shell company, Vice Admiral," I interjected, stepping past Thomas.
Julian's eyes snapped back to me, the pupils dilating into sharp black needles.
"What did you say, Captain?"
"The avionics contract for the MH-60 Black Hawk your brother flew," I said, my voice dead level. "Manufactured by Vance Defense Dynamics. Underwritten by my father's offshore accounting firm in Panama."
My transceiver chimed again, displaying an unredacted federal warrant signed by the United States Attorney General at 10:14 a.m.
