Seattle’s Most Ruthless Don Locked Me in His Penthouse—Until I Read Page 14 of Our Marriage License!

Chapter 6 - The Architect in the Harbor

Chapter 6 illustration

The silence that fell over the courtyard was so profound that only the rhythmic patter of rain against the hoods of the idling SUVs remained.

Julian Vance’s cigar slipped from his fingers, hissing as it hit the puddle near his designer shoes.

"Your... what?" Julian stammered, staring at me as if I had grown a second head. "She's an hourly nurse! She doesn't hold equity in a hospital trust!"

"She holds one hundred percent of the Montgomery estate lineage, Julian," Marcus Thorne said, tapping the tablet screen to display the certified state registry. "Her maternal grandmother was Eleanor Montgomery, the sole benefactor of the 1964 charter. The second Aiden signed that marriage certificate tonight, her dormant inheritance automatically activated under executive spousal co-trustee rules."

Julian backed away two paces, his hands trembling as he reached into his overcoat for his phone.

"This is a manufactured conflict of interest!" Julian screamed, his composure shattering completely into high-pitched panic. "I’ll have the Ninth Circuit void the transfer before dawn!"

"The Ninth Circuit just dismissed your injunction five minutes ago, Julian," Marcus announced, turning the tablet toward the glare of the headlights. "Signed by the presiding chief judge. Your forty-two-million-dollar bond purchase was classified as an unapproved corporate raid, and the state attorney general just issued an emergency asset freeze against Vance Logistics."

Down the street, the deep, mechanical wail of police sirens began to rise through the night mist, closing in rapidly from three separate directions.

Julian looked at his security guards, but the men were already quietly holstering their weapons, stepping backward toward the perimeter gate to avoid being tied to a sinking ship.

"You planned this," Julian whispered, staring at Aiden with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You didn't marry her to protect your syndicate seat. You married her to take our port!"

Aiden didn't answer him. He simply reached into his pocket, pulled out his pristine silk handkerchief, and dropped it into the dirty puddle right beside Julian’s crushed cigar.

"Frank," Aiden called out to the driver. "Clear the driveway."

Two marked county sheriff cruisers and an unmarked federal transport vehicle tore around the corner of the avenue, their red and blue strobe lights flashing violently against the hospital walls.

The deputies spilled out, badges gleaming, surrounding Julian's SUV before the engine could even rev.

"Julian Vance?" the lead deputy barked, unholstering a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. "You have an active federal warrant for healthcare extortion, commercial bank fraud, and evidence tampering."

Julian didn't run. He hung his head in absolute, suffocating defeat, the cold metal cuffs clicking around his wrists as his sixty-thousand-dollar watch was pinned behind his back.

As the officers marched him away into the back of the cruiser, Aiden turned toward the Maybach, his posture straight as iron, but his chest heaving with exhaustion.

We climbed into the warm, leather interior of the car, the heavy doors sealing us off from the storm outside.

The Maybach surged forward, gliding smoothly through the rain toward the downtown skyline.

I looked at Aiden across the center console.

His breathing had finally settled, but his hands remained flat on his knees, still trembling slightly from the physical contact in the stairwell.

"You held my arm," I said softly, looking at his fingers.

Aiden didn't look up, but his jaw worked silently for a moment before he spoke.

"You were going to fall," he whispered, his voice rough and stripped raw. "I couldn't let you fall."

A small, genuine smile touched my lips as I leaned back against the headrest, clutching the heavy hospital logbook against my lap.

The war for the hospital was won. My sister’s future was secured.

Then, the encrypted satellite radio mounted beneath the dashboard let out a sharp, continuous emergency tone that made Marcus slam on the brakes.

The radio crackled to life, broadcasting on an unlisted maritime frequency used only by deep-water cargo vessels.

A smooth, cultured baritone—speaking with an unmistakable, icy European accent—drifted through the car’s speakers with terrifying clarity.

"A rather amusing defense of the clinic, Aiden," the voice murmured over the sound of distant ship horns. "Julian was always far too impatient with regional politics."

Aiden went completely rigid, his gray eyes snapping toward the glowing frequency monitor.

"Victor," Aiden whispered, his knuckles turning porcelain white against his trousers.

"You secured the medical trust, my dear boy," the man chuckled softly through the static. "A brilliant little victory. But while you were busy playing hero in the basement of Northlake... my fleet just docked at Terminal 4. And by sunrise, I will be the one holding the master deed to your mother's grave."

The radio went dead with a sharp, hollow click, leaving only the sound of our breathing in the dark car as the first pale light of dawn began to break over the Puget Sound.
