Seattle’s Most Ruthless Don Locked Me in His Penthouse—Until I Read Page 14 of Our Marriage License!

Chapter 5 - The Red Line in the Sand

Chapter 5 illustration

A smoke canister tumbled across the linoleum, spewing thick, chemical white fog into the small room.

Alarms across the hospital began to shriek in unison, the high-pitched emergency klaxons echoing down the concrete corridors.

"Move!" Aiden barked.

Before I could react, an iron grip clamped around my upper arm.

The contact was so sudden, so forceful, that I expected Aiden to flinch, but his fingers remained locked like a steel vise around my sleeve, shielding my body behind his broad chest as he pulled me toward the back fire exit.

His breath was ragged, his pulse hammering against my side, but he didn't let go.

He broke his own rule to keep me alive.

We burst through the heavy steel fire door into the rain-soaked rear courtyard of the medical center.

Waiting beneath the security floodlights, blocking our path to the armored Maybach, were four black SUVs.

Leaning against the hood of the center vehicle, holding a lit cigar in one hand and a gold-trimmed cane in the other, was Julian Vance.

Julian wore a pristine camel-hair overcoat, his slicked-back dark hair gleaming under the spotlights, surrounded by eight armed private security contractors.

"Good evening, Aiden," Julian called out over the hiss of the rain. "I see you brought your charming little alibi along for the ride."

Aiden slowly released my arm, his fingers lingering on my wool sleeve for a fraction of a second before dropping to his side.

His hand was shaking violently from the forced contact, but his face was an unreadable mask of absolute, sovereign authority.

"You're trespassing on municipal medical property, Julian," Aiden said, his voice cutting through the storm.

"Not anymore," Julian laughed, flicking his cigar ash into a puddle. "Thirty minutes ago, the Vance syndicate purchased the underlying bond debt on Northlake Medical Center. As of 3:30 a.m., I am the chairman of this facility's board of directors."

He pointed his cane toward the heavy leather book clutched tightly against my ribs.

"Hand over the logbook, nurse," Julian sneered at me. "And maybe I won't have the county prosecutor charge you as an accessory to medical fraud."

I stepped up beside Aiden, feeling the radiating heat from his frame in the freezing air.

"You bought the debt paper, Julian?" I asked, my voice carrying clearly across the wet asphalt.

"Every last cent," Julian bragged, spreading his arms wide. "Forty-two million dollars in commercial bonds. Which means I dictate what records are certified, and what records are destroyed."

Marcus Thorne stepped out from the shadows of the fire door, holding his encrypted tablet high so the security cameras above the bay caught the screen.

"Did your private equity team check the senior subordination clause on those bonds before you wired the funds, Julian?" Marcus asked smoothly.

Julian’s smirk twitched. "What subordination clause?"

"Section 14 of the Washington Public Hospital Trust," I answered, opening the leather logbook to the inside back cover, where an embossed gold foil seal was permanently pressed into the heavy paper. "Northlake Medical Center was founded in 1964 under an irrevocable public covenant funded by the Montgomery-Chambers Foundation."

Julian froze, his cane stopping mid-air.

"Any entity attempting a hostile debt buyout of this hospital," Marcus continued, reading the legal notice aloud, "triggers an immediate acceleration of the underlying state land grant. The property doesn't belong to the bondholder, Julian. It reverts entirely to the primary trust protector."

Julian’s eyes darted frantically between Marcus and Aiden.

"Who is the trust protector?!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking against the wind.

Aiden took a single, deliberate step forward onto the wet asphalt, his towering frame casting a massive shadow across the headlights of Vance’s SUV.

"My wife," Aiden said.
