THEY STOLE MY RETIREMENT—UNTIL HE STRUCK ME IN MY OWN FOYER

Chapter 3 - The Cold Light of Reality

At 7:00 AM, I walked down the stone path toward the guest house carrying a silver tray with two cups of black coffee and a manila folder.

I didn't knock. I used the master key to unlock the heavy oak door and walked into the living room.

Trent was asleep on the sofa, still wearing his trousers and a rumpled dress shirt. Rachel was sitting on the edge of the bed in the adjoining room, her hair unwashed, staring at her laptop screen with red-rimmed eyes.

When she saw me, her posture stiffened. She immediately stood up, stepping in front of the desk as if to hide what she was working on.

“Mom,” she said, her voice raspy. “You shouldn't be in here. Trent is sleeping. He had a very stressful night with his international operations.”

“His international operations are currently frozen by order of the State Superior Court,” I said, placing the coffee tray on the coffee table.

Trent stirred, sitting up quickly. He rubbed his face, his eyes darting toward the door before settling on me with a sneer.

“You’re trespassing on our space, Eleanor,” Trent said, standing up and pulling his shoulders back in an attempt to project authority. “We had an agreement. We’re staying here until my clearing accounts settle.”

“There are no clearing accounts, Trent,” I said. I opened the manila folder and dropped three sheets of paper onto the table in front of him.

He glanced down. His arrogant posture faltered for half a second before he tried to recover. “What is this garbage?”

“That is the corporate registration for Aegis Digital Logistics,” I replied calmly. “Along with the bank records showing your four-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer attempt to Bank Vontobel in Zurich at 1:47 AM this morning. The transfer was rejected, Trent. The funds are currently frozen under a court-ordered injunction regarding felony fraud.”

Rachel rushed forward, snatching the papers from the table. “What are you talking about, Mom? Trent’s software is proprietary! He showed me the dashboard!”

“He showed you a static HTML page hosted on a server in Romania, Rachel,” I said, looking directly into my daughter’s eyes. “He took the five hundred thousand dollars from your father’s house—the house I gave you—and used four hundred thousand of it to cover his personal trading losses from three months ago. The remaining hundred thousand went to pay the lease on his rented Ferrari and his former wife’s alimony in Nevada.”

Rachel turned to Trent, her face pale. “Trent... what is she talking about? Who is Victoria Sterling?”

Trent’s expression hardened into something ugly and dark. The polite, charming son-in-law was completely gone.

“Shut up, Rachel,” Trent snapped, turning his back on her. He stared at me with pure malice. “You think a few printouts mean anything, old woman? Rachel signed every single document. She’s the primary officer listed on the investment contract. If Aegis goes down for fraud, your precious daughter goes to state prison right beside me as a co-conspirator.”

Rachel gasped, stepping back as if she had been struck. “Trent... you said I was signing corporate officer papers so I could be a vice president!”

“You signed authorization forms for a fraudulent capital raise, darling,” Trent sneered, his voice dropping all pretense of affection. “Your mother wants to play financial detective? Great. She just put her own daughter in the crosshairs of a federal grand jury.”

I stepped closer to Trent, stepping directly into his space until I was standing less than two feet from him.

“You made three fatal mistakes, Trent,” I said, my voice steady, sharp, and cold as iron.

“First, you assumed a woman my age wouldn't understand modern financial architecture.”

“Second, you assumed my daughter’s affection for you would outweigh thirty years of maternal blood.”

“And third...” I pointed to the small lapel pin I was wearing on my sweater—a small black dot that had been recording every word since I unlocked the front door. “...you just confessed to intentional corporate fraud and coercion on a digital audio recording that is currently streaming directly to the district attorney’s financial crimes division.”

Trent’s face went completely white. He reached out to grab my shoulder, his face contorted in rage.

“You crazy old bitch—”

Before his fingers could touch my sweater, the front door of the guest house was kicked open with a heavy metallic crack.
