The House on Willow Lane
Chapter 4 - The Secret in the Garden
The buyer stopped halfway up the path when Clara explained the trust. He asked to see the documents, read them twice, and called his solicitor.
Daniel tried to interrupt. “We can still work something out.” Mrs. Reed looked at him. “We already did. Forty years ago.”
The lawyer arrived with a second copy from his archive. Together they traced the records Daniel had tried to hide. No one raised a voice; the papers did all the speaking.
Clara learned that her grandmother had bought the homes one by one, keeping rents affordable and leaving repairs to a shared fund. The garden office had been the heart of it all.
“Why did she never tell me?” Clara asked. Mrs. Reed smiled. “She wanted you to choose the work, not inherit an obligation you did not understand.”
Daniel sat on the stone step. For once he did not offer an excuse. He agreed to return the deposit and correct the claims he had made.
When the visitors left, Clara opened the windows in the blue room. The garden was quiet. Nothing valuable had been buried there. What mattered had been written down, protected, and passed from one pair of hands to another.
On the desk she found one last note: A home is worth more when somebody gets to stay.
