Chapter 2 - The Trust Covenant
Four federal marshals stepped through the threshold, their badges glinting beneath the chandelier fixtures.
Leading them was Arthur Bradley, the senior managing partner of Manhattan’s preeminent estate litigation practice—and my father's former personal counsel.
Arthur didn't glance at the stage.
He walked straight down the center aisle, his cane striking the parquet floor with rhythmic, military precision.
"Victoria Vance," Arthur announced, stopping three paces from our row. "You are formally served with an emergency preservation order issued by the Southern District of New York."
Victoria backed away, her spine striking the velvet backrest of her front-row seat.
"Arthur, you senile fool," she hissed, her aristocratic facade disintegrating into pure venom. "You represent the Vance Family Trust. I am the sole managing director of that trust."
"You were the managing director, Victoria," Arthur corrected smoothly, unlatching a heavy titanium briefcase.
He pulled out a heavy sheaf of cream parchment bound with crimson ribbon.
"Under Article 12, Subsection C of Jonathan Vance’s irrevocable master covenant," Arthur recited, his voice carrying into every silent corner of the room. "In the event that the direct male heir produces legitimate biological issue, all discretionary control exercised by a non-blood spouse terminates instantly."
The crowd erupted into frantic, hushed whispers.
Heads swiveled toward Preston, who sat two rows back, his face crimson, his fists clenched around his useless presentation folder.
"Preston is Julian's legal son!" Victoria shouted, her chest heaving beneath her couture gown. "We signed the adoption decrees twelve years ago!"
"Preston was adopted under false pretenses of intestate succession," Arthur replied without missing a beat. "Specifically, an affidavit signed by you stating that Julian had no surviving biological descendants."
Arthur turned the parchment toward me.
"At 7:45 this evening, the probate surrogate entered an emergency freeze on all liquid disbursement accounts held by Vance Global Holdings."
I looked from the document to Victoria’s pale, sweat-sheened face.
"You knew," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet loud enough to freeze the breath in her throat.
"Julian, listen to me—"
"You took my brother's signature," I continued, taking one slow, deliberate step toward her. "You faked the DNA report on Elena’s pregnancy, and you used Marcus to push me out of the company’s voting block."
Victoria’s eyes darted toward the exits, her arrogant posture shrinking into cornered panic.
"You have no proof Marcus was involved in anything illegal," she rasped.
Elena stood up from the front row, turning to face us with that same, dangerous smile.
"We don't need to prove Marcus was involved, Victoria," Elena said, holding up a sleek black thumb drive. "Because Marcus left the original encrypted servers in my care."
