I Banished My Ex-Wife Nine Years Ago—Until An Anonymous Note Led Me To Her Leaning Porch In Kentucky!

Chapter 3 - The Fifty-Million-Dollar Note

Chapter 3 illustration

I tapped the speed-dial toggle for Marcus, my chief operating counsel in Manhattan.

The phone rang once before Marcus’s voice boomed through the speakerphone with crystalline clarity.

"Daniel. Where are you? The institutional board meeting starts in an hour."

"Marcus," I said, keeping my gaze locked squarely onto Julian Vance’s smirk. "Run a commercial lien search on Vance Agricultural Land Trust, headquartered out of Lexington."

Julian’s smirk froze for a split second, his brow twitching. "Is this supposed to scare me, clown?"

Marcus’s fingers clattered across a keyboard in New York, the audio feed completely clean.

"Got it," Marcus replied within ten seconds. "Vance Land Trust holds eighty-four thousand acres across eastern Kentucky. Highly leveraged. Their primary credit facility is a forty-five-million-dollar revolving note held by Manhattan Commercial Credit."

"Who owns Manhattan Commercial Credit, Marcus?" I asked softly.

A two-second silence hung over the porch, broken only by the chirping of cicadas in the trees.

"Whitmore Capital holds eighty-two percent of their preferred debt tranches, Daniel," Marcus stated flatly. "You bought their secondary paper two quarters ago during the banking consolidation."

Sheriff Miller slowly lowered his hand from his utility belt, glancing nervously between me and the well-dressed developer.

Julian’s face flushed an ugly shade of plum. "This is an amateur bluff! Manhattan Commercial is a tier-one institution! They don't take orders from some grease monkey in a rented truck!"

"Marcus," I said into the phone. "Trigger the cross-default clause on the Vance facility based on material regulatory non-compliance in their land acquisition arm."

"Executing right now," Marcus answered. "Capital call notice transmitting via Fedwire to their master account."

Julian’s phone in his suit jacket erupted with a high-pitched, dual-tone emergency ring.

He snatched the device from his pocket, his thumb swiping across the glass with aggressive speed.

The screen illuminated with an automated wire alert from his chief financial officer:

ALERT: MANHATTAN COMMERCIAL ACCELERATED 45M CREDIT LINE. ALL REGIONAL ESCROWS FROZEN. DO NOT EXECUTE TRANSIT LIENS.

Julian stared at the red banner, the blood visibly draining from his cheeks until his lips were pale as ash.

He looked up from the screen, his gaze moving from my beat-up denim jacket to the quiet confidence in my posture.

"Whitmore...?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking into a dry, broken rasp. "You're Daniel Whitmore?"

"You had forty minutes to clear this parcel, Vance," I said, stepping down one porch step so I stood six inches taller than him. "Now you have forty seconds to get your truck off my ex-wife’s dirt."

Sheriff Miller took a deliberate step backward off the rotting stairs, clearing his throat.

"Julian," the sheriff muttered under his breath, "I think we need to review this paperwork at the county seat."

"No!" Julian hissed, his arrogance collapsing into cornered desperation. "The tax sale deed was registered with the county recorder! A debt call doesn't vacate a signed municipal deed!"

From inside the house, the floorboards creaked as Leo ran back to the doorway, holding a yellowed manila folder tied with old string.
