"Don't Embarrass Me," My Billionaire Husband Warned—Then He Shoved My Face Face-Down Into Our 5-Tier Cake In Front Of 100 Guests, Unaware The Entire Reception Was Being Live-Streamed To Wall Street

Chapter 6 - Her Own Terms

Chapter 6 illustration

Two years passed like a cleansing mountain river washing over rough granite.

The golden afternoon sun broke through the floor-to-ceiling windows of a historic brick loft building on South Lexington Avenue in downtown Asheville. The space was filled with the fragrant, sweet aroma of blooming gardenias, roasted espresso beans, and fresh paint. High on the exposed brick wall behind the reception desk, elegant brass lettering caught the light:

**VANCE CREATIVE STRATEGY & ADVOCACY GROUP**

I stood in the center of the wide, sunlit conference room, reviewing the final brand architecture for our newest regional client—a statewide coalition providing emergency financial grants and legal advocacy for survivors of domestic and corporate abuse.

After Daniel's sentencing and the subsequent civil restitution settlements, I hadn't fled the state. I hadn't changed my name or hidden behind closed doors. With the assistance of Aunt Eleanor, I had reclaimed my maiden name, recovered my intellectual property, and launched Vance Creative with a single founding principle: to build communications platforms that give women the resources, legal firepower, and narrative control to reclaim their lives.

In twenty-four months, our boutique agency had grown from a two-desk operation into an eight-woman powerhouse, handling high-stakes corporate public relations, crisis management, and non-profit brand launches across the Southeast.

The brass bell above the front entrance chimed with a cheerful ring.

Claire walked into the office, wearing a stylish olive trench coat, balancing two large iced oat-milk lattes in one hand and carrying an oversized pink bakery box in the other.

"Delivery for the managing partner," Claire announced with a broad, infectious grin, setting the coffees down onto the polished oak conference table.

I laughed, setting my pen aside. "Claire, what did you do?"

"Today is October fourteenth, Maya," Claire said softly, her eyes shining with warmth and pride. "Do you know what today is?"

I paused, looking at the date on my watch. Two years ago today, the North Carolina Superior Court had officially finalized my absolute decree of annulment, legally wiping the Mercer surname from my identity as if it had never existed.

Claire untied the satin ribbon on the bakery box and lifted the lid with an exaggerated flourish.

Inside sat a small, exquisitely crafted single-tier chocolate torte from our favorite bakery in Montford. The surface was finished in glossy, dark-chocolate ganache, dusted with edible gold leaf, and topped with fresh organic raspberries.

Written across the center in crisp, elegant, hand-piped white icing were three words:

**ON HER TERMS.**

A deep, rich laugh bubbled up from my chest—a sound that was completely free of anxiety, untouched by fear, and devoid of the heavy, suffocating dread that had shadowed my life for so many years.

"I thought we instituted a permanent ban on ceremonial pastries in this firm," I teased, reaching into the desk drawer to pull out two small silver forks.

"This isn't a ceremonial pastry, Maya," Claire said, wrapping her arm around my shoulders and pulling me into a fierce, warm squeeze. "This is a victory monument. And this time, nobody gets to touch it but you."

I looked down at the chocolate torte, then looked up at my reflection in the glass windows.

The faint silver line across my left cheekbone was still there, catching the late afternoon sun. But it was no longer a symbol of violence or a reminder of public humiliation. It was a badge of honor—a physical testament to the moment I decided that my life, my dignity, and my future would never belong to anyone else.

I picked up the fork, cut a generous, rich piece of the dark chocolate cake, and took a bite. It was sweet, complex, and utterly perfect.

Down on the street below, the autumn leaves were swirling in the cool mountain breeze, carrying the sounds of the vibrant, thriving city into the room.

My phone chimed on the table. It was an email notification from our lead account executive: our firm had just been awarded a major three-year contract to manage the statewide communications network for the North Carolina Women's Legal Initiative.

I smiled, taking a slow sip of my iced coffee, looking out over the blue ridges of the mountains stretching toward the horizon.

Daniel Mercer had tried to bury my face in the dirt to teach me obedience.

He had forgotten that some women are not made of glass.

Some women are forged in the fire, tempered by the storm, and destined to build their own kingdoms from the very stones meant to crush them.

I set the fork down, picked up my pen, and got back to work.
