The cupboard smelled of cedar and old paper. Behind a shelf, Clara found a narrow door with a brass lock. The key from the lawyer fitted perfectly.
Inside stood a desk, two chairs, and boxes labelled with street names. This was no hidden treasure room. It was an office that someone had carefully erased from the house.
The first box held letters from families who had nearly lost their homes. Each letter ended with a thank-you to Evelyn, her grandmother.
One document carried Daniel’s signature. He had agreed to preserve the records. A second document showed that he had offered the very same properties to a development company.
Clara heard his car stop outside. She photographed the papers before she stepped into the hallway.
“You cannot understand what those mean,” Daniel said. Clara handed him the letter addressed to her. For the first time in her life, her brother had nothing to say.
