Chapter 1 - The Letter Nobody Opened

Story cover

When Clara returned to the house on Willow Lane, the garden had swallowed the path. Her grandmother had been gone for three weeks, but a cup still waited beside the kitchen window.

The lawyer had given her a key and one instruction: do not sell the house until you have opened the blue room. Clara thought he meant a bedroom. There was no blue room on the floor plan.

Her brother Daniel arrived before sunset with a buyer already on the telephone. “We can finish this tomorrow,” he said. “There is nothing here worth keeping.”

Clara found the envelope beneath the kitchen clock. Her name was written in the careful handwriting she remembered from birthday cards. Inside was a photograph of the house, taken fifty years earlier.

On the back, her grandmother had written: The room is not blue because of its walls. Look where the morning light falls.

At dawn Clara stood in the hallway. A thin stripe of blue crossed the floor, reflected from a stained-glass pane above the stairs. It ended at a cupboard Daniel had nailed shut.

She called him. He did not ask what she had found. He asked whether she had opened it. That was when she knew he had been keeping a secret.

Clara put down the telephone, picked up the hammer, and pulled out the first nail.
