The Don’s Curvy Maid Slept Outside His Door—Until Her Midnight Security Log Exposed His Chief Lieutenant’s $40M Coup!
Chapter 2 - The Hallway Confession
The red indicator light on the micro-recorder blinked once through the cracked plastic casing.
Adrian knelt on one knee onto the polished marble, completely ignoring the rain lashing against the floor-to-ceiling glass at the end of the corridor.
He didn't touch the brass poker.
He extended his palm, his long fingers steady and open.
"Give it to me, Claire," Adrian murmured.
Claire’s hand shook so violently that the tiny device clattered twice against his palm before he closed his fingers over it.
"I heard them in the pantry at midnight, Mr. Moretti," Claire whispered, pulling the wool blanket tighter around her shoulders. "They were using the internal intercom lines."
Adrian plugged the recorder into the high-security field tablet he drew from his inner trouser pocket.
Dean Russo’s raspy, arrogant voice crackled through the tablet’s encrypted speaker:
*"The maritime shipment arrives at Pier 42 at dawn. If Moretti wakes up and signs the port clearance, the whole forty-million-dollar collateral transfer goes back to the family trust. Disable the executive alarm loop on the fourth floor."*
A second voice, sharp and cultured, replied over the recording:
*"The circuit breaker trips at three-thirty. Make sure the private security contractor has the service gates open."*
Adrian’s slate-gray eyes turned to absolute zero.
The second voice didn't belong to a street-level soldier.
It belonged to Julian Vance—Adrian’s chief corporate attorney and the managing trustee of the Moretti Maritime Logistics Syndicate.
Adrian looked down at the brass fireplace poker lying beside Claire’s bare feet.
"You brought this from the downstairs library?" Adrian asked, his voice deadly quiet.
"The security guards at the perimeter gate weren't at their posts when I went down to get water at two," Claire said, her voice catching. "The master security panel in the kitchen was flashing amber. I knew if they bypassed your door locks, you wouldn't have time to reach the wall safe."
Adrian stared at her.
Twenty armed men patrolled the grounds.
A multi-million-dollar biometric surveillance grid swept every square inch of the twelve-acre estate.
Yet the only perimeter defense standing between him and an internal assassination was a five-foot-four housekeeper wrapped in a threadbare blanket, armed with a twenty-dollar brass fire poker.
"You slept on the marble floor for three nights," Adrian realized, the pieces finally assembling behind his calculating gaze. "Because the amber bypass light turned on Tuesday."
"I couldn't tell you without proof, Mr. Moretti," Claire whispered, looking down at her bare toes. "Mr. Vance is your family lawyer. Dean is your top lieutenant. I’m just the woman who vacuums the rugs."
Adrian reached down, took her small, cold hand into his, and lifted her effortlessly to her feet.
"You aren't just the woman who vacuums the rugs, Claire," Adrian said, his grip firm and immovable. "You are the only person in this house who isn't a traitor."
Before Claire could answer, the master power grid across the entire estate abruptly died.
