My Imprisoned Ex Sent A Courier To Seize My Toddler's House—Until My Forensic Audit Seized His Defense Fund At Noon!
Chapter 4 - The Seizure of the Mercedes
Julian stood paralyzed on my porch steps, his skin turning the sickly shade of curdled cream.
"That's an accounting distortion," Julian rasped, his aristocratic composure disintegrating into raw, cornered panic. "Our firm’s ledgers are private work product! You cannot access our trust accounting without a federal subpoena!"
"We don't need a federal subpoena, Julian," Marcus Cole said, pulling a folded white document from his jacket pocket. "We have an emergency search-and-seizure order signed by the Presiding Judge of the State Bar Disciplinary Board at 9:45 this morning."
Down at the curb, the two men in windbreakers suddenly stopped unhooking their tow chains.
A sleek black Dodge Charger bearing the emblem of the Washington State Auditor’s Special Investigations Unit pulled up hard against Julian’s Mercedes, blocking it completely.
Two plainclothes investigators in navy blazers stepped out, their gold badges gleaming on their belts.
Julian scrambled down the wooden stairs, his briefcase swinging wildly against his knee.
"Officers! Hold on!" Julian shouted, waving his gold pen toward the Charger. "I am Julian Vance, senior partner of Vance & Sterling! There is a procedural defect in this administrative inquiry!"
The lead investigator didn't even break his stride.
He bypassed Julian entirely, walked straight to the driver’s side of the silver S-Class, and slapped a bright orange, adhesive-backed document across the driver's side window.
SEIZED BY ORDER OF THE STATE TREASURER: CIVIL ASSET FORFEITURE UNDER RACKETEERING ACT.
Julian grabbed the investigator’s shoulder. "That vehicle is private commercial property! You can't touch my car!"
The second investigator stepped forward instantly, twisting Julian’s arm away with textbook mechanical efficiency, driving the high-powered attorney against the warm metal hood of his own Mercedes.
"Keep your hands to yourself, Mr. Vance," the investigator warned, his tone flat as slate. "This vehicle was purchased with funds routed through Vance & Sterling’s secondary escrow node. An account that was locked down under an emergency court order twelve minutes ago."
Julian gasped for breath, his cheek pressed flat against the silver paint, his platinum glasses knocked crooked across his nose.
"Claire!" Julian yelled over the hood, looking up toward the porch with wild, desperate eyes. "Call them off! Ryan misled me! He told me the Bennett trust had defaulted on the private estate taxes! I was only acting as an officer of the court!"
I stood at the top of the porch steps, Emma resting comfortably on my hip, her small fingers twirled into my hair.
"You weren't acting as an officer of the court, Julian," I said, my voice carrying cleanly across the quiet street. "You were acting as a vulture trying to scavenge what your brother couldn't steal with poison."
The flatbed tow truck’s hydraulic lift engaged with a deep, grinding mechanical groan.
The heavy steel winch cables snapped tight around the front axle of Julian’s luxury sedan.
With a sharp jerk, the car was dragged upward onto the diamond-plate steel bed, its alarm system blaring in high-pitched, pathetic pulses that echoed through the quiet cul-de-sac.
Julian watched his eighty-thousand-dollar car disappear onto the flatbed, his hands trembling violently as he reached into his vest for his phone.
Before his fingers could touch the glass, the device in his pocket let out a frantic series of rapid, continuous notifications.
