My Husband’s Brother Claimed My Late Father’s Codicil—Until The Security Hard Drive Proved The Hospital Was Empty!
Chapter 6 - The Shadow in the Suite
I froze, my hand hovering two inches above the desk blotter.
The executive suite was supposed to be completely cleared by corporate security forty minutes ago.
The heavy mahogany door to the private washroom slowly swung open on silent brass hinges.
Stepping out onto the plush wool carpet was Savannah Cole.
She wasn't in handcuffs.
She had stripped off her tailored black blazer, wearing an oversized beige trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a messy, practical ponytail.
Her face was completely scrubbed of makeup, her eyes wide, sharp, and entirely devoid of the tears she had shed in the boardroom.
In her right hand, she held an unencrypted satellite data phone.
“Savannah,” I said, not moving a muscle as my pulse kicked into high gear.
“Don't bother pressing the desk alarm, Claire,” Savannah said, her voice completely different from the fragile, whining tone she had used with Grant.
It was calm.
Low.
And unmistakably European in its subtle, calculated cadence.
“The security grid on this floor was bypassed through the service duct twelve minutes ago,” she continued, stepping around the corner of the desk.
“The FBI took you into custody,” I said, keeping my hands visible on the blotter.
Savannah let out a quiet, dry laugh that sounded chillingly familiar.
“The FBI took an associate in a black blazer into custody,” Savannah said, tapping the satellite phone against her palm. “Federal agents are surprisingly predictable when they think they’ve caught a pregnant mistress.”
She reached into the pocket of her trench coat, pulled out a thick, leather-bound passport wallet, and tossed it onto the mahogany desk.
It landed right beside my father’s calendar.
Inside were three diplomatic passports from the Republic of Singapore, all bearing her face under different corporate aliases.
“You thought Victor was the mastermind, Claire,” Savannah murmured, leaning forward until her hands rested flat on the desk across from me. “Victor was just an arrogant, indebted degenerate who needed sixty million dollars to keep his European holdings from being liquidated.”
My blood ran cold in my veins.
“Who do you work for, Savannah?” I demanded.
Savannah smiled—a razor-sharp, predatory expression that made Victor look like an amateur.
“I don't work for anyone, sister-in-law,” Savannah whispered softly.
She turned the satellite phone screen toward me.
The display showed a live financial terminal tracking the global commodities market in London.
A massive, hostile acquisition order was executing in real time, absorbing ninety percent of Sterling Logistics’ maritime shipping contracts across the Atlantic basin.
The entity executing the buyout was registered as *The Montgomery-Vance Syndicate*.
“Grant was an idiot,” Savannah said, her words landing like frozen iron. “Victor was a monster. But while you spent the last six hours using your father’s insurance money to save this office building... my syndicate just acquired every single cargo ship your family owns on the high seas.”
The satellite phone emitted a low, continuous chime as the acquisition reached one hundred percent completion.
Savannah leaned in, her eyes boring into mine.
“The company on land is yours, Claire,” she whispered. “But the ocean belongs to us. And our flagship container vessel just entered international waters with three billion dollars of your company’s sovereign freight.”
